Aging Well In New Jersey

You have always taken care of yourself when you are sick and in pain. As you age your body begins to slow down and you may development some health issues. That is why taking care of yourself at any age especially after 50 should be most important to you. Being well over this agedoes not only mean staying physically in shape but also keeping emotionally healthy. Over the age of 50 you should focus time and effort to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Wisdom and experience are not the only things that come with age, but if youadopt a healthy lifestyle including healthy eating habits, your life could be happier and longer lasting. Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center would like to suggest a few ways that you can enjoy life to the fullest.

Enjoy what you have and who you have - As we grow older, we are more susceptible to loss. The things we lose can include people and things so everything becomes more important. Enjoy spending time with family and friends to create and strengthen bonds that might have been broken a long time ago. Make sure you understand that all things cannot be changed. If you get frustrated by this fact it will only bury feelings that can lead to anger and depression. So always lookfor positivity when you face major challenges.

Participate in extra activities – When you retire you will have more time for friends, family and activities. You could become more adventurous and try different life experiences. Don’t waste time-continue to do something that you always enjoyed or try something new! Schedule fun time with your children or grandchildren, take your dog out for a long walk, learn a new skill or take a class in the local community center. Traveling is always something fun to do for the weekend or for a couple of weeks. To stay more connected you can write a blog about your new experiences on the internet to keep those creative juices flowing and connect with new people who share the same thoughts or interests.

Stay connected or make new friends – As you age your support network will be crucial so it is important to have a flourishing social life. There are many ways to reach out to others in your community. Having a large amount of company can help support you in times when you need it the most. It could also help fight depression and loneliness. Spend time with people that you enjoyand make you feel happy and comfortable in any situation. Make an effort to meet new friends by joining a local club or volunteering at an organization. It is a rewarding way to give back and to meet new people.

Healthy Nutrition – Make sure you care for your body and stay active no matter what your age is. You can maintain a healthy diet by eating a lot of high fiber fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. This will keep you feeling full and energetic for longer and prevent unhealthy snacking. Always stay hydrated because mature adults are prone to dehydration due to physical changes. Trying new foods can not only be fun and exciting but could benefit your health tremendously! Taking new supplements and ingesting vitamins like calcium, and vitamin B and D can balance the lifestyle changes and maintain nourishing diet. Never skip meals and graze throughout the day to prevent you from being hungry.

Exercise Daily – Many adults stop exercising as they get older even though exercise assists them in maintaining a strong body, brain and help alleviate pain. Exercise and healthy eating can even boost your mental health and improve the confidence you have in yourself. Make sure your primary care giver is aware that you are interested in an exercise program. The physician needs to evaluate the program you would like to start to see what will work best for you. If you are unfamiliar with daily exercise, the best way to get active is just walk! Again speaking to your physician about any new exercise you would like to try is a must.Your body will also need plenty of sleep, so don’t put your body in a cycle with poor sleeping habits to keep you up all night. A minimum of 8 hours will be needed daily.

Continue Your Education – Take some educational courses to stay mentally active and to help develop new skills. These courses can be at a local community and wellness center or at a local community college. These classes do not have to be difficult or not easy to grasp. They should be something you enjoy, is fun and keep you creative. A sharp mind will keep a healthy body and lifestyle.
