Storeroom

Most patients, when they think of a trip to a hospital for any reason, consider the location, doctors, nursing, and reputation. What most people do not realize is how important the Storeroom is in a hospital. Our hospital gets daily deliveries to insure our inventory doesn’t run out. As a result, we have staff here by 6am, Monday through Friday to prepare the deliveries to the requesting departments in timely manner. When a department requires a rush delivery, our Storeroom personnel respond immediately and are always courteous and professional. Since the storage area is so important, it requires extreme organization and cleanliness. Shipments are unpacked and put in their specified areas right away. Taking an inventory count is a daily process, as well as rotation of the stock. Expiration dates are checked monthly and rotated. Rarely, when any of our supplies expire, we set it aside for donation. We do, however, make it our goal to never order more than we need. Our goal is to eliminate any/all waste.

The integrity of each item is also critical. The staff knows how to check the packaging for any breaks in the sterility of the items. Currently, we are working to get the Storeroom inventory on a bar code/computer based system. This will track and trend productivity and efficiency for inventory and ordering.

The mailroom works in close contact with the Storeroom. They are always ready to handle Storeroom returns. In addition, they handle our interoffice mail. The Storeroom is as important as any other department at Meadowlands Hospital and we work very hard to keep things running smoothly, effectively and in a timely manner. We are very proud and we continue to find new ways to improve.
